A Swede’s challenge in Darfur

Source:

I commend the diplomatic effort of Swedish U.N. envoy to Darfur Jan Eliasson, who faces the difficult challenge of putting an end to the genocide and conflict in Darfur and bringing the warring parties together in a peace settlement.

It is impressive to see that Eliasson is carrying on the tradition of Swedish diplomacy as a United Nations envoy.

We can only hope that Eliasson will be able to show the same caliber of courage to stop the genocide in Sudan as was shown by Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg 62 years ago in his 1944 mission to Budapest.

Wallenberg risked his life and took swift and courageous action to save the lives of 100,000 during the Holocaust.

May Eliasson be endowed with Wallenberg’s heroism, spirit of solidarity and his ability to protect and save lives.
