When hearing of the German threat to refuse permission for the refugee Children’s Transports to cross the border into Holland, Gertrude went to Vienna and confronted Adolf Eichmann, the head of the Central Bureau for Jewish Emigration. She convinced him to issue a collective exit visa for six hundred Austrian Jewish children so the children would eventually arrive in England.
Gertrud organized a total of forty-nine transports to Britain. Even on September 1 when Germany invaded Poland and occupied Danzig, Gertrud was in Holland, continuing to help in the transfer of Jewish children to England until Germany invaded the Netherlands in May of 1940.
After Kristallnacht, these Kindertransports brought over 9,000 German, Austrian and Czech Jewish children to Britain.
