Roman Bilecki, Poland

Melissa Weiss

Together with her cousin Julian, Roman Bilecki saw the hardships the Jews faced in Poland, and wanted nothing more than to help. The Jews were told were to seek refuge from the Nazis in parts of the woods where it would be unlikely that they would be found. Roman and Julian would bring them food, jumping from tree to tree so no one could follow their footprints to the secret hiding spots. After the Nazis discovered that Jews were hiding in the woods, Bilecki family courageously showed them other safe places to hide. Liberation came in 1944 and by then Julian and Roman manages to save 23 Jewish individuals. Roman 70 years old and now lives in New York. Julian is also 70 years old and lives in the Ukraine. Thanks to these two courageous and compassionate individuals many innocent people were saved.
