AUTHORS AND HISTORIANS TO EXAMINE RAOUL WALLENBERG’S LEGACY
On Wednesday, September 19, the Museum of Jewish Heritage—A Living Memorial to the Holocaust held an event dedicated to Raoul Wallenberg’s life and legacy. Kati Marton, author of “Wallenberg: The Incredible True Story of the Man Who Saved the Jews of Budapest,” and Bengt Jangfeld, historian, were joined by the Museum Director Dr. David G. Marwell for the discussion that marked the 100th anniversary of Wallenberg’s birth. The event was co-sponsored by the Hungarian and Swedish Permanent Missions to the UN and the Museum; and organized by the UN Department of Public Information’s (DPI) and the United Nations Outreach Program.

U.S. HONORS WALLENBERG IN SWEDEN
Senator Johnny Isakson presented Nina Lagergren a document bestowing the Congressional Gold Medal upon Raoul Wallenberg, during the ceremony organized at the Swedish Parliament on September, 5, 2012. The medal is the highest U.S. civilian honor and recognizes the Swedish diplomat’s “heroic actions” to save tens of thousands of Hungarian Jews from Nazi death camps. Ms. Lagergren, the 91-year-old half-sister of World War II hero Raoul Wallenberg, will receive the gold medal at a later date.

WALLENBERG HONORED IN AN AUSTRALIAN PARLIAMENT

New South Wales Premier Barry O’Farrell marked the centenary since Wallenberg’s birth Wednesday, September 5, by announcing an annual human rights award in Wallenberg’s name. Among the speakers in the New South Wales Parliament House were the ambassadors of Sweden, Hungary and Israel, as well as George Farkas, whose father served as a close aide to Raoul Wallenberg.

“COURAGE IN THE FACE OF EVIL” – COMMEMORATING RAOUL WALLENBERG

A seminar to commemorate Raoul Wallenberg was organized on the 24th of September by the Swedish Embassy to the Holy See, the Union of Italian Jewish Communities and the Community of Sant’Egidio.

The main speakers were Bengt Jangfeldt, historian and Wallenberg biographer, Frank Vajda, saved by Wallenberg in 1944/45; and Claudio Magris, writer and essayist.

WALLENBERG REMEMBERED IN BUDAPEST
On the occasion of the centenary of the birth of Wallenberg a special commemoration was held in the Dohany Street Synagogue in Budapest, Hungary on September 9, 2012.  On the occasion the Memorial Park of the Synagogue was named after Wallenberg. Niece of late Swedish diplomat Louise von Dardel, Hungarian President Janos Ader, Ambassador of the State of Israel to Hungary Ilan Mor, State Secretary of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry Zsolt Nemeth, Ambassador of Sweden to Hungary Karin Olofsdotter, and Chairman of the Federation of Hungarian Jewish Communities Peter Feldmajer attend the official inauguration of the plaque of the Raoul Wallenberg Memorial Park.
