			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-3471" src="http://www.raoulwallenberg.net/wp-content/uploads/pre2011/photomid/P02f1_01.jpg" width="266" height="189" />La Nación interviewed architect Claudio Vekstein. The meeting took place in his private atelier located at ”Pasaje Santamarina” in the historic quarter of the city: ”this studio has become a depot since I have acquired another one in Vicente López (where he carries out the 2000 Director Plan de la Costa de Vicente López)”, says Vekstein while he draws a number of maquettes from a box. ”Since 1998, when we began to develop this project, up until today, the monument has transformed several times; now its elements are well<br />
defined, and only details have to be taken care of”.</p>
<p>Throughout his career, Vekstein collaborated with architect Amancio Williams, and completed a M.D. in Germany with Enric Miralles and Peter Cook. Later on, he designed the Rose-Museum in Germany, also with Miralles. Not long ago, he finished another monument: the Monument Homage to Amancio Williams, for the End of the Millennium.</p>
<p><strong>- Is there any link between the Monument to the Just and any other project or architectonic  work?</strong></p>
<p>- Yes. The architectonical concept for this work came from the &#8216;Monument for the Death March in Weimar&#8217; (to the nine workers killed in resisting the Kapp Putsch) by Walter Gropius. Also from  &#8216;Change&#8217;, a land-art work by Richard Serra which consists of six elevations, each representing different horizons that intersect and extent into the real horizon.</p>
<p><strong>- What did this project mean to you?</strong></p>
<p>- Because I have Jewish roots, even though I do not come from a religious background, I have my own interpretation on the subject. This allows me to reflect on the topic both from inside and from outside, as the monument demonstrates.</p>
<p>It has been a privilege for me to take on this challenge together with architect Vitorgan Maltz. We both come from the same institution and have utilized this project as an opportunity to search for and finally discover the Just; I believe the quest brings each individual to find its own position among them (both the just and the persecuted Jews) at the platform.</p>
<p><strong>- What can you say about the materials employed for construction?</strong></p>
<p>- As a result of their austerity, the different triads (for example the diverse shades of the soil) together with water and light, are a wonderful opportunity to engage with the infinite.</p>

<p>A monument will be built in ”Ciudad Universitaria” in honor of the 15.670 non Jewish men and women who risked their lives and their freedom to save thousands of Jews from extermination during the Holocaust. The piece, charged with poetic content, was conceived by architects <a href="http://www.raoulwallenberg.net/?en/press/3470.htm">Claudio Vekstein </a>and Nora Vitorgan Maltz. Architects Ariel Jacubovich, Frank Arnold, Santiago Bozzola, Malca Mizrahi, Pablo Peirano and Atilio Pentimalli (who was in charge of the published renders) collaborated in the task. The project was entrusted by the International Raoul Wallenberg Foundation (in agreement with the Government of the City of Buenos Aires) through the Argentine House in Jerusalem, an N.G.O. founded in 1966 by monsignor Ernesto Segura, among others, that promotes inter-religious communication and seeks to shelter Christians, Jews, Muslims, Protestants, believers or agnostics.</p>
<p>Currently, the project is in the stage of definitive preliminary sketch; construction is estimated to begin in an year. Once finished, the piece will become the first monument dedicated to the Saviors of the Holocaust.</p>
<p>The monument will be displayed on a triangular field located at the mouth of the Vega stream, delimitated by the Río de la Plata and the soon to become ”Paseo Costero del Conjunto Parque de la Memoria” (where a memorial for the victims of state terrorism will be built, together with a monument for peace and  coexistence).</p>
<p>The stunning architectonical memorial suggests an interesting use of forms, materials and light. From the access point to the monument, people can take different paths which symbolize the commitment of each person to the subject matter. One trail tangentially borders the monument and then unites with the ”Paseo Costero”. Another trail takes the visitant through smooth terraces until reaching the highest point, a suspended concrete platform orientated towards Jerusalem, which serves as a viewing point and also connects with an empty, semi-buried, and half-lighted chapel: the enceinte of the Just, a true personal space for reflection. This space is wide and of little height at first, and then becomes narrow and tall with a steep pendent towards the interior. In the ceiling, formed by successive layers of bricks, there is a small fracture that allows some light to get in; this glow, together with the river (when the tile grows), bathe the cement wall on which the 15.670 names of the saviors are engraved. The lateral trail and the Path of the Just are divided by a short wall that is a fundamental part of the project.</p>
<h2>Walking among the Just</h2>
<p>Following the initial trail, one reaches an ecumenical chapel with benches made out of cement. This space lays in the open air, in front of the river and bellow the concrete platform. It has capacity for 200 people; therefore it could be utilized for ceremonies and meetings. Moreover, if followed further along, the initial trail leads to a shore of stones that lead deep into the river.</p>
<p>The bricks utilized for the terraces will be very large: 40 centimeters long. These were specially made large to obtain the different tones that would remark their individuality. In addition, the sequence of terraces in the grassless soil will be covered with small stones.</p>
<p>”With Nora we put together a series of associations that symbolize the unity among religions -says Verkstein. The location of the monument facing the river suggested me the idea of brick steps that form a succession of horizons which transform into Catalan vaults before they reach the main platform. Amancio Williams, in the Pavilion for Bunge &amp; Born or in his other constructions in front of a river, generates a project that combines the sky with umbrellas or other vertical forms that confront the horizon. Nevertheless, the horizon, river and soil,  which is the core of our project, is represented with two basic elements: the concrete platform and the soil in its different stages, emphasizing the horizontal ones.”</p>
<p>The architects believe ”the project seeks, with its own character, to place itself next to the river nurturing from its strength. Its emotional spirit only vaguely suggests stillness, of slow but firm and definitive movement. It adopts a bizarre sense of boundaries, putting itself on the border of danger… and all that appears to be texture is in essence its own text: the texture of memory”.</p>

<p>The names of more than 20,000 saviors will be included in this unprecedented piece of art. The placing of this Monument has been anticipated through an agreement with the Government of the City of Buenos Aires within the River Plate coast in a space of 2,500 square meters. The project and direction is in charge of the volunteer architects Nora Vitorgan Maltz and Claudio Veckstein.</p>
<p>The project is placed in a sector of the River Plate coast area, more precisely on the coast sector of the University City, in the north exit which forms one of the laterals of the mouth of the Stream Vega. That location has been recently ratified as the result of the &#8216;Contest of Ideas for the University City Area&#8217; organized for the general ordering and the development of the Area, allowing it to function integrated to the Memory Park Complex, in an independent and protected way, in accordance with its character.</p>
<p>Placed in relation to the amplitude and immensity of the River horizon, it will be beneficial for the contemplative and reflexive spiritual function which encourages it, with the aim of being a proof of the original idea of the institution, through the spiritual amplitude, of promoting the dialogue, the Understanding and Peace among people and nations, and the meeting of the different beliefs.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><!--CUERPO--><!--ER-->During the Second World War, 15,670 non-Jewish people sacrificed their lives to save those of Hebrews persecuted by Nazis: they were the righteous gentiles, who will have their own monument-homage in the Buenos Aires coast.</p>
<p>The architects <strong>Claudio Veckstein</strong> and <strong>Nora Vitorgan Maltz</strong>, on request by the <strong>International Raoul Wallenberg Foundation</strong>, created a monumental triangle: two of its faces coexist with the River Plate and the third one is related to the Memory Park.</p>
<p>There you can take a few pathways: a runway surrounds the monument; and a pathway made of earth embankments has a concrete platform suspended, facing Jerusalem.</p>
<p>Through a ramp, people get to a semi-buried chapel, protected by the monument and with a small crack in the ceiling allowing sunlight to come in. In that place seats are installed so that 200 people can get together for reflection. <!--FOOTER--></p>
